The Majestic Lion Rock
The main attraction in Sigiriya is the huge rock that rises up to 200 meters (656 feet) above the ground. This big rock was once home to an ancient palace and fortress built by King Kasyapa in the 5th century AD.
The Lion Gate
As you get closer to the rock, you’ll see the Lion Gate, a giant stone carving of a lion sitting down. Even though only the lion’s paws are left today, this entrance used to lead to a spiral staircase that took people up to the palace on top of the rock.

Around the rock are the Royal Gardens, which were very carefully designed. These gardens have fancy water features, pools, and systems to move water around. They show how smart people were in ancient times.
